Founded in 1864, Casa Havaneza do Chiado, in Lisbon, is one of the oldest and most emblematic cigar shops in the world. It was the first of its kind in the country and it immediately established its identity. Open since 1969, Concha Douro is one of the oldest pastry shops in the city of Porto. Here you can make your meal at lunchtime and buy groceries; but the ex-libris of Concha Douro is its pastry shop, especially the confectionary biscuits, ‘seminaristas’ (smaller version of a traditional sweet made with puff pastry, with egg filling and cinnamon and royal glaze topping), ‘glorinhas’ (circular cake with a hole in the middle – it has more or less the shape of a donut – with a very high puff pastry basis; a thick layer of egg jam is applied on it and finally a thin white and crispy layer of sugar syrup covers it all), ‘pastéis de nata’ (Portuguese egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon) and ‘Hungarian sweets’ (butter biscuit, half of which has chocolate coating). Concha Douro is proud of the quality of its products, which it promotes in the raw materials used and in the maintenance of the original recipes.
The mythical Café Corcel, born in 1967 in the Pinheiro Manso area, has recently reopened with a new life. The space is more beautiful and luminous, modernised, but containing some traditional touches, and its shop window reflects this, where we find an exhibition with a lot of conventual sweets. This is the star of this space, the confectionery, and we are not talking about the conventional cakes, known to all pastries in Porto, but rather about conventual confectionery: egg chestnuts, egg cones, almond delights, Tentúgal pastries. There are also homemade pizzas, salads and carpaccios, if you want a light meal and a DJ at the weekend, to enjoy while drinking a cocktail.
